“When We Collided” Mini-Review + Quotes & Celebrating the Little Things Tag

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! There is so much I am thankful for, including the beautiful bookish community I’ve met through blogging. I thought there would be no better time to do the Celebrating the Little Things Tag than now, along with a short discussion of one of my recent reads, When We Collided.

When We Collided by Emery Lord

Rating: 3.5/5

I have very mixed feelings about this novel. It is sweet and poignant, yet at the same time, I feel as though it could have been so much more meaningful if written differently. I loved both Viv and Jonah; however, I liked them more as individuals than as a unit. The ending, I must say, is beautiful, and the novel enraptured me with how hopeful and hopeless it could be at times. Emery Lord’s writing is lovely, so I had to share my five favorite quotes from the novel:

• “We are seventeen and shattered and still dancing. We have messy, throbbing hearts, and we are stronger than anyone could ever know.”
• “Because it’s all so fleeting, isn’t it? . . . I’m just looking for some kind of permanence, so my mark will linger on the world once I’m gone, in the places where I found joy.”
• “Sometimes I think a heart of porcelain would be easier. Let it drop out of my ribcage and break on the floor, no heartbeat, the end.”
• “My dark days made me strong. Or maybe I was already strong, and they made me prove it.”
• “Oh, I imagine it’ll hurt less eventually. I think there will always be a hole, though. But lace is one of the most beautiful fabrics, you know. All those holes and gaps, but it’s still complete somehow – still lovely.”

All in all, When We Collided had its ups and downs for me. I appreciated its aching honesty, but if you’re looking for a life-changing, heart-shattering read about mental illness, I would suggest picking up All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven instead.
